Stan Bowman was raised and grew up in Little York, Indiana in the southern part of the state. In 1962 Stan Bowman was a 32 year on rookie sprint car race driver who be came an instant star.
In 1962, he won, as a rookie in his first official USAC race, a major race at Eldora Speedway defeating some of the best drivers of the era. Two months, after driving very successfully he was retained by one of the top teams in the Indy Championship lever to drive the Dean Van Lines Special. This would have taken him to the Indianapolis 500.
Sadly two weeks before his first Indy race he lost his life in an accident at the Terre Haute Speedway in Indiana. In 1964 Dean Van Lines retained a young rookie named Mario Andretti to take the ride. In 1969 Mario won the 500.
